The Alkūnai oak tree is shrouded in legends. Local people consider the oak to be sacred. It is said that people saw St. Virgin Mary by the tree, and an old man who used to walk there was none other than God himself.

Up until the end of the 20th century, the oak tree was a place for celebrating May, for evening parties and otherwise for the youth of the surrounding villages to meet.

A little later, after the end of the May celebrations, the oak tree became a favorite gathering place for students. V. Jančiūrienė from the village of Jutoniai remembers, how after she joined the Lithuanian National Youth Union „Jaunalietuviai“, and later becoming a scout, would often come to the oak tree with like-minded people. Teachers and students would also gather to spend time in nature.
